Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most important thing to pack for an Amazon trip?

Insect repellent with at least 30% DEET is non-negotiable. The Amazon has one of the highest mosquito densities in the world, and protection is essential regardless of trip type or duration. After that, a yellow fever vaccination certificate and malaria prophylaxis (consult your doctor beforehand) are the health priorities.

What clothes should I wear in the Amazon?

Lightweight, light-coloured long sleeves and long trousers are ideal. They protect against insects and UV while staying cool. Quick-dry synthetic fabrics are far better than cotton, which stays wet for hours after sweat or rain. A wide-brim hat and a packable rain poncho complete the essentials.

How much cash should I bring to the Amazon?

ATMs are limited outside of Manaus and Belém. Bring enough Brazilian Real (BRL) for your entire trip — guides, tips, local food, and souvenirs. A rough rule of thumb is BRL 100–200 per day beyond pre-paid lodge packages, plus an emergency buffer. USD is sometimes accepted but at poor exchange rates.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccination for the Amazon?

Yes, a yellow fever vaccination is strongly recommended — and in many cases mandatory — for travel to the Brazilian Amazon. Some neighbouring countries also require proof of vaccination upon entry if you are arriving from Brazil. Get vaccinated at least 10 days before departure so it has time to take effect, and carry the original vaccination card.
